PERSONALITY:
At one time, Retsuko was a bright-eyed, hopeful young girl who graduated high school with a dream of finding a new life in the working world and making a name for herself. This, however, would not come to pass, and it left her, now working for five years as an accountant, bitter and angry at both her job and at life in general. From such ills as a boss who saddles her with too much work to coworkers who suck up to higher-ups to get by, everything about her life seems to be going nowhere fast. This inward dissatisfaction with the circumstances of her life, and especially the working portion of it, is the underlying factor that drives Retsuko to do a myriad of things simply to cope with just how much rage she holds in at seemingly all times.
 
The most obvious manifestation of her attempts to deal with the stress of her daily life is her love of karaoke and especially death metal music. Her most obvious outlet for this particular “hobby” is going to a local karaoke bar, where she is a regular to the point that the staff knows her by name, and belting out the loudest, angriest metal she can find.
 
These sessions are key to Retusko keeping her sanity, and they have even become something of a social event wherein several friends at work join her on occasion, allowing her to be social while still letting out her frustrations via music. On occasion, Retsuko will even go so far as bring a microphone to work with her in her bag in order to belt out her aggressive form of music in the bathroom to help her to get through the day. It is also worth noting that the side of herself she shows while singing is what Retsuko considers to be her “true” self, backing up that the cheerful and peppy girl she shows at work isn’t the full breadth of her persona. This is most evident when at karaoke with then-current boyfriend Resasuke, another worker at her office, when she uses a particular metal song as a means to break up with him.
 
At work, Retsuko tends to do as much as possible without rocking the boat. She does her job without complaining, even when her boss is degrading her, and takes on extra work without so much as a word of protest. This often leads others to take advantage of Retsuko, mostly in the form piling extra work on her or forcing her to work overnight just to get all of that extra work done. While she may gossip with her friends at work, or blubber to them after hours of drinking, she would never tell off her superiors, and in one incident, she didn't come forward after being harassed at work, instead relying on a friend to do so for her.
 
The one time she does manage to stand up to her boss, a large pig named Ton, was while drunk at a company office party. During this incident, she engaged in a sing-off with her boss in which she actually seemed to gain the upper hand for once. However, as everyone at the party was drunk, no one remembered the incident the next morning. This shows that Retsuko, freed from her inhibitions by way of alcohol, is capable of standing up for herself, but she simply doesn’t because she doesn’t want to upset things, up to and including losing her job.
 
While this facade gets her through the day, it is also the source of much of Retsuko’s frustration with life. Without a fulfilling career, she tends to look at her circumstances as hopeless and inescapable to the point of being depressing. Due to this, Retsuko often fantasizes about leaving her job for good and becomes dreamy when the topic presents itself.
 
This is first seen when Puko, a friend of Retsuko’s from her high school days who is incredibly rich, comes up with the idea of starting her own company. Retsuko jumps at the possibility of leaving her work for a better company to the point thinking of quitting her current job. This leads her to be rather forgetful and dreamy around the office, which causes her boss Ton to think that she might be planning to quit, which prompts him to throw her even more work as a result. When Puko reveals that she couldn’t pay Retsuko a living wage due to the overhead costs of the new company, this causes Retsuko to slink back to work in resignation which results in her being chewed out by her boss and given the nickname “calendar” in that the day could come that she’d be fired at any time.
 
This undying wish to quit her job came up again after going to a friend’s wedding. This led Retsuko to feel that marriage could be a way out of her current circumstances and give her a happier life. To this end, she began dating a co-worker of hers named Resasuke, whom she met at an office singles' meet-up. Despite how boring Resasuke turned out to be, Retsuko continued dating him for some time with this goal in mind. However, after enough time, things came to a head, and using a metal song to deliver the news, she broke up with him saying that Resasuke didn’t know who she truly was and that their relationship wouldn’t work out. In the end, this failure showed Retsuko that being in a relationship where she wasn’t even able to be herself would never make her happy or banish the ill feelings she had towards her work life.
 
Outside her many attempts at finding an excuse to quit her current job, Retsuko tends to get very very into any hobby or other new experience that might give her some shred of happiness. While karaoke is by far her biggest hobby and creative outlet, Retsuko has partaken in several other pursuits as well. This shows largely in the Christmas episode, where, with some tips from a co-worker, Retsuko begins posting pictures of food and related items on Instagram. While this begins innocently enough, with her posting her dinner online and feeling good for herself when these pictures get a handful of likes, it soon grows into a full-on obsession, with Retsuko going out of her way to go to fancy cafes just for the likes it earned her online. This all comes to a head on Christmas Eve, when Retsuko recreates a fancy dinner in the office after being forced to work overtime, and though she eventually is able to find a few of her friends and have an actual dinner together, the Instagram incident shows how all-in Retsuko can get concerning her hobbies.
 
In all, Retsuko is a girl who is unhappy with her life but rarely lets that show to others. By never complaining about her work, she fits in well enough, but she also suppresses a rage as a result that she must let out occasionally, typically via karaoke, so that it does not affect the rest of her life. She is the type of person who wants change to occur in her life but is largely unwilling to do anything about to make this happen until presented the opportunity from others, as seen both with both Puko and Resasuke. However, for all the negative emotions she feels towards life and work at times, she still is a well-meaning person who has friends who will support her in times of need... times that just happen to come up quite a lot due to her lifestyle.
